James “Jim” Boutillier is a highly respected attorney with more than three decades of experience helping individuals, families, business owners, and agricultural clients navigate complex legal and financial matters. Since being admitted to practice law in 1991, Jim has built a reputation for providing strategic counsel in estate planning, business succession planning, probate administration, and business and real estate transactions.
After earning his Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University School of Law, Jim pursued advanced legal studies at Georgetown University Law Center, where he obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation. He then served as a law clerk for the United States Tax Court, gaining valuable insight into tax law and its impact on estate and business planning. Following his clerkship, Jim returned to Washington and began practicing with Betts Austin in Seattle.
In 2002, Jim returned to his native Yakima Valley and partnered with Stanley S. Pratt to establish Pratt & Boutillier, PLLC. The firm later evolved into Pratt Boutillier Kirkevold & Farmer, PLLC, continuing its longstanding commitment to serving clients throughout Central Washington.
Jim's practice is particularly focused on helping high-net-worth individuals, families, agricultural producers, and business owners preserve and transfer wealth, protect assets, and plan for future generations. His extensive background in taxation allows him to provide sophisticated planning strategies designed to minimize tax burdens while helping clients achieve their personal and business objectives.
A dedicated member of the legal and professional community, Jim belongs to the Washington State Bar Association, including its Real Property, Probate and Trust Section, the Yakima County Bar Association, and the Yakima Estate Planning Council. Born and raised in the Yakima Valley, Jim remains deeply connected to the community he serves. Outside of his legal practice, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their five children. His family includes two children attending Washington State University and one attending the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado, reflecting the strong values of education, service, and commitment that continue to guide both his personal and professional life.
